Published in 1898, The City of Gold is an adventure novel by Emilio Salgari. The story is set in South America at the end of the 16th century and recounts the expedition of four men in search of El Dorado.

Emilio Salgari (Verona, August 21, 1862 – Turin, April 25, 1911) was a writer of highly popular adventure novels. An extraordinarily prolific author, he is best remembered for creating the adventure sagas of the Indo-Malay cycle (or the cycle of the pirates of Malaysia, with his most famous character being Sandokan) and the Antillean corsairs (featuring the character of the Black Corsair). He also wrote historical novels, such as Burning Carthage, and various fantastic stories, including The Wonders of the Year 2000, in which he was a precursor of science fiction in Italy.

Many of his works have been adapted for film and television. Salgari's adventure stories, characterized by exotic settings, daring heroes, and thrilling plots, have captivated generations of readers. His ability to transport readers to distant lands and immerse them in exciting adventures has earned him a lasting place in the canon of Italian literature.

The City of Gold, one of Salgari's lesser-known works, follows the journey of four men in search of the legendary city of El Dorado. Set against the backdrop of the South American wilderness, the novel weaves a tale of exploration, danger, and the pursuit of a mythical treasure. Salgari's vivid descriptions and masterful storytelling bring the characters and their quest to life, offering readers a glimpse into the lure of the unknown and the allure of discovering lost civilizations.

Through his diverse body of work, Emilio Salgari cemented his reputation as one of the great Italian adventure writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His enduring legacy continues to captivate readers around the world, who are drawn to the thrilling narratives and the sense of wonder and exploration that permeate his stories.
